This is the 2022 race course for Dark Hallow Wallow, part of the Treading Trodding Trails races series put on by Knoxville Track Club. The course has not changed in at least three or four years.
The PDF of the course map provided by KTC is here.
Part of Big Ridge State Park, it is about an hour’s drive from West Knoxville. Parking is plentiful. There are picnic tables and grills available, although the race itself is usually in the early spring a little cold for a picnic.
I think its a beautiful course — at least the second half — and I always enjoy it. It is a few degrees cooler than Knoxville, so be prepared for that. While it isn’t easy to get lost, you do want to make sure you take the correct fork(s): there are not a lot of flags so the wrong fork will take you off course for quite awhile.
If you’ve never run this course take a moment to look at the elevation chart, the first two miles are brutal, and where nearly all of the elevation is in the 5-mile.
The hills at the very end aren’t a walk in the park either, but mostly it hurts if you sprinted up the previous hills.
I’m told the 11-mile is worse all-around, but I don’t yet have first-hand experience with that one.
